Angel City FC’s Alyssa Thompson received a call-up to the U.S. women’s national team for three friendlies later this month.
The USWNT will face Iceland on Aug. 24 in Austin, Texas, and again Aug. 27 in Nashville, Tennessee. Three days later, the team will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Argentina.
For Thompson, now 19, this is her first call-up since the post-World Cup game Dec. 4, 2023. She was the youngest member of the U.S. 2023 World Cup roster at 18.
The former Harvard-Westlake High star has had a remarkable second half for Angel City FC, scoring five goals in her past eight games. She didn’t score her first goal this season until Aug. 24, when she scored two in a 2-1 win against San Diego Wave FC.
She has five goals and seven assists, eclipsing her rookie totals (four goals, one assist.).
“I’m not seeing anything differently,” she said after a recent game. “I’m just getting myself into better positions and am more confident in myself. Knowing that I can take the ball up to create something whether it be passing the ball off or by scoring.”
Angel City host the Utah Royals on Sunday in a regular-season finale.
This is the first international window and games for the USWNT since winning the Olympics in France. The 26-player roster will be trimmed to 23 for each of the three games.
“Our focus is forward, our focus is on our process, and we want to keep chasing new heights,” USWNT coach Emma Hayes said. “I love that we get to see most of our Olympic Team again after a few months, but I also love getting to work with some newer players and evaluate how they perform in our environment.
“Every 90 minutes of an international match is full of learning, for me and the players, and we’re looking forward to three great games for our fans to end our home schedule before we go to Europe in November.”
GOALKEEPERS: Jane Campbell (Houston Dash), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars)
DEFENDERS: Emily Fox (Arsenal FC), Eva Gaetino (Paris Saint-Germain), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave FC), Casey Krueger (Washington Spirit), Hailie Mace (Kansas City Current), Alyssa Malonson (Bay FC), Jenna Nighswonger (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Emily Sams (Orlando Pride), Emily Sonnett (NJ/NY Gotham FC)
MIDFIELDERS: Korbin Albert (Paris Saint-Germain), Sam Coffey (Portland Thorns FC), Hal Hershfelt (Washington Spirit), Lindsey Horan (Olympique Lyon), Rose Lavelle (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Olivia Moultrie (Portland Thorns FC), Ashley Sanchez (North Carolina Courage)
FORWARDS: Yazmeen Ryan (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Emma Sears (Racing Louisville FC), Jaedyn Shaw (San Diego Wave FC), Sophia Smith (Portland Thorns FC), Mallory Swanson (Chicago Red Stars), Alyssa Thompson (Angel City FC), Lynn Williams (NJ/NY Gotham FC)
